Description: The Fire and Smoke Restoration Technician (FSRT) and Odor Control Technician courses provide comprehensive training in the science and practice of fire, smoke, and odor remediation for residential and commercial structures and contents. The FSRT certification covers scoping, mitigation, cleaning, deodorization, subrogation, spoliation, and documentation of fire and smoke damage projects, preparing technicians and other materially interested parties to properly perform and document restoration services when combined with field experience and on-the-job training. The Odor Control Technician course focuses on olfaction and odor theory, odor detection processes, equipment, chemical options, and practical applications for addressing odors caused by biological contaminants such as decomposition, urine, and mold; combustion-related sources including fire and smoke damage; and chemical sources such as fuel oil spills and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Mark Cornelius founded EMTA in 2014 and currently serves as President of Disaster Recovery Industries, while remaining hands-on in the restoration and cleaning industry. With over 30 years of experience, he has been an approved IICRC instructor since 2008 and holds triple Master certifications. A former firefighter and EMT-I for more than a decade, Mark is also a certified NPQ-1 Fire Instructor. He continues to serve the industry as a member of the IICRC Board of Directors since 2021 and was elected 2nd Vice President in 2025.
